Plum Creek Parkway Drivers: Look for new traffic technology. Testing scheduled for Jan. 9

Helping you get where you’re going is a priority for Castle Rock Public Works. Innovative technology is coming to the Plum Creek Parkway corridor to do just that. Testing is scheduled to begin after 9 a.m. today.

As part of the road improvements along Plum Creek Parkway, the Town is installing a new electronic traffic management system. It sounds complicated, but it’s simple to use and is expected to smooth out the weekday commute for drivers getting to Interstate 25 during the morning rush hour.

Here’s how it will work:

New electronic signs will be installed along westbound Plum Creek Parkway. These electronic signs will designate lane assignments (whether they are through, through-or-right, or right-only), based on time of day.

Throughout most of the day, the signs will display arrows with the same lane assignments drivers are already used to. (The westbound right-hand lane has access to northbound I-25, or goes through to the other side of the interstate. The westbound middle lane only goes through, and the westbound left-hand lane has access to southbound I-25 only.)

During the morning peak – roughly 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. – the lane assignments will change slightly so an extra lane of traffic can access northbound I-25.

The westbound right-hand lane will become a “right-turn-only” lane for drivers accessing northbound I-25. The westbound middle lane will become a “through-or-right” lane for additional access to northbound I-25. A similar system will be set up along northbound Wilcox Street on the signal arms at Plum Creek Parkway, so the lane assignments match for those turning left onto Plum Creek Parkway to access northbound 1-25. The new electronic signs will designate the lane assignments.

Testing and timeframe
It’s important this new technology is thoroughly tested before it goes live. Engineers have been testing it in the shop, and, soon, they will test it on the street. Live testing is expected to start around 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9.
