Norris Croom recommended as Castle Rock’s new fire chief

FireChief-NEWS

Thirty-two-year fire and rescue veteran and current Acting Castle Rock Fire and Rescue Chief Norris W. Croom III is recommended to be the department’s new chief, Town Manager David L. Corliss announced Thursday.

Town Council will be asked to ratify Corliss’ recommendation at its Sept. 18 meeting, at which point Croom’s appointment would become official.

Croom succeeds former Chief Art Morales, who retired in May after 15 years with the department.

“I’m very honored and humbled to be selected as Castle Rock’s next Fire Chief. We have established a great team within the department, and without their support, I would not be in this position today,” Croom said. “I also want to thank all who have helped me throughout my career, and those who encouraged and supported me during this selection process.”

Croom began his fire career as a volunteer firefighter for the Town in 1986. He was the first career firefighter the Town hired in 1993. He has spent his entire career since with CRFD, serving at all levels and in nearly all areas, including in paramedicine, hazardous materials, emergency management, training and operations. He’s been a chief officer in the department since 1998 and is a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer program. He has also earned the Chief Fire Officer and Chief EMS Officer designations from the Commission on Professional Credentialing through the Center for Public Safety Excellence.

A native of North Carolina, Croom moved to Castle Rock in 1986. He and his wife, Jody, have three sons, Norris IV, Carson and Brogan.

“None of this would have ever been possible without the undying love and support of my family,” Croom said. “There have been many sacrifices over the years, but they have always been there for me. For that, I am forever thankful.”

Croom was selected from among about 100 applicants for the post – a high number that reflects the Town’s reputation as a desired community in which to live and work. Fire Department employees, community members and Town Councilmembers were all involved in the selection process.

“I believe Norris is the right candidate to continue CRFD’s tradition of excellence,” Corliss said regarding Croom’s recommendation. “He’s got the skills, abilities and knowledge to keep Castle Rock Fire and Rescue at the forefront of the profession, and to continue pursuit of the department’s vision of being the best at providing emergency and prevention services.

“Norris also exemplifies the departments values of strength, honor, integrity, excellence, leadership, dedication and service,” Corliss said. “We are fortunate to have him leading the team forward.”
